Introduced by the house of Hugo Boss in 2005, Boss Soul is an oriental spicy fragrance for men, developed by perfumer Ursula Wandel. Having an image that’s constructed on the contrast between light and shadow, the fragrance being officially described as “naturally seductive, captivating mysteriously bewitchingly masculine”. The face selected to front Boss Soul is one of the most recognized male models, the Dutch Mark Vanderloo, who is featured in the advertisement directed by Peter Lindbergh. According to the press release “Lindbergh used a clever contrast between shadow and light against a modern, metallic, masculine backdrop to create a series of intense moments”.
Because of its image, Boss Soul seemed to me like the masculine counterpart of Boss Intense, designed by the same Ursula Wandel, even though this fact was never substantiated with official statements. The bottle of Boss Soul was developed by Henry de Monclin, manager of Atelier Dinand, a famous house specialized in the design of perfume bottles. His source of inspiration was, reportedly, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, creation of the Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, winner of many prizes. For the bottle, de Monclin employed (again!) the topic of contrast, between perfectly cut lines and curves and between transparency and opacity.
Boss Soul begins with citrus accords mixed with spices: bergamot, mandarin, black pepper, cardamom and star anise. The mid development features notes of cinnamon, coriander, lavender and mace; then it eventually dries down to a woody character of Tamboti wood, vetiver, musk, amber and Tonka bean. The conclusion is that Boss Soul is “a fragrance that captures the silent, seductive power of a man’s inner strength”, a thing mentioned as well in the press release.
