I remember that I tested Armand Basi In Blue, the third masculine fragrance from the Spanish brand based in Barcelona, four years ago. The scent was introduced in 2005, as a masculine counterpart for 2003’s In Red, having the generous nature as its source of inspiration. From the advertising material, we were warned that In Blue was not appropriate for the “conventional” man and this is what I found out throughout the test.
The construction of In Blue remains faithful to the classic olfactory pyramid, with its top, heart and base notes. From the first moment that I sprayed In Blue onto my wrist I was able to detect the easily recognizable aroma of bergamot (this is one citrus note that I like a lot!) juxtaposed to a blend that included as well mandarin, grapefruit and the spiciness from cilantro leaves. Then, as the fragrance moved into the mid development, it turned to a spicy facet, embodied by strong accords of pepper and balanced with neroli, blackcurrant and lotus flowers. Afterwards, In Blue developed nicely on my skin, until reaching the dry down, the moment in which the sensual character of Asian patchouli was melted in the warm character of oriental woods, from which the most dominant note was that of oak.
The flacon in which In Blue was presented reflects clearly the selected source of inspiration, Mother Nature, sporting a minimalist design (a feature of Armand Basi) and the transparent glass adorned with the silhouettes of bamboo trees; the grey-blue color scheme adds elegance to the image.
