When I think about Azzaro Pour Homme, I imagine one of the few examples of classic in masculine perfumery. Moreover, on personal level, this scent introduced in 1978 is among the ones that have been in my perfume wardrobe on more than one occasion. And until last week (shame on me!), I imagined this as the only source of inspiration for many of the contemporary men scents. But then I discovered Aramis Classic.
Aramis, one of the companies belonging to Estée Lauder made its debut on the market in 1964, positioned in the men’s grooming products business, level prestige. One of the first cosmetic names dedicated to men, this company draws its name from one of the characters in Alexandre Dumas’ classic “The Three Musketeers”. Aramis Classic was introduced in 1966 as a woody chypre developed by perfumer Bernard Chant.
Aramis exhibits a strong character, highlighted by a leather note that confers it a different aroma, quite unique among the woody chypre creations. The fragrance opens with a blend of Artemisia, bergamot, myrrh and gardenia. I perceived these first accords extremely pleasant on my skin and it instantly made me think of Azzaro Pour Homme. However, this was launched 12 years later, so we might presume a certain inspiration. Later, follows a heart imbued with jasmine, patchouli, vetiver and sandalwood and subsequent to a couple of hours, the dry down unveils the leather accord, juxtaposed to a combination of oakmoss, castoreum and warm amber.
The bottle that holds Aramis has somewhat of a vintage look, being made from transparent glass that reveals a golden liquid. The packaging box however, features an interesting amber shade that brings to mind class and style. Aramis has a long lasting trail and is very conspicuous which may not be preferred by everyone.
