Fragrance Review

According to the description from their official website, Agonist is “a Nordic fragrance brand launched in November 2008”. Founded by designers and , the selected tagline was excellent (“unique fragrances embraced by handcrafted Swedish glass”), but this is exactly what’s prevented me from even considering a test. Since I found their products too pretentious, I read more into the topic, to find out that, after all, there might be one scent featuring that I needed to sample.

Moreover, in case you missed it, features two categories of products: Sculpture Line and Spray Line, in both cases the essence remains unchanged, only the presentation being the one that makes the difference (and the price, of course). My choice for the sampling was Liquid Crystal, a unisex developed by and arrived on the market in 2010 with the flacon from the Sculpture Line made by (a glass artist with Kosta Boda).

I started this test by imagining how nice this incense would smell on me, to finish it off with a disappointing conclusion. Liquid Crystal smells in the first 2 minutes like a barbershop then veers into a note of discrete lavender, undermined by something detected as a subdued mint accord. The dry down belongs to an atmosphere filled with warm amber and it seems that the lavender maintains enough power to be perceived as well. Then, the incense insinuates, but sadly this is more like a hint.

The official website speaks about this perfume as being “inspired by the process when the 1000 degree hot melted glass slowly but intensely changes in shape and suddenly freezes and solidifies for eternity”. The official notes include: bergamot, absinth, oriental spices, cloves and Sicilian orange for the top notes; lavender, incense and patchouli in the heart; and vetiver, white amber, Tonka bean, labdanum and cedar wood for the base notes. One interesting aspect is that the Spray Line sports a rectangular bottle made from transparent glass, with a black label on the front that lists all the ingredients.

Overall, Liquid Crystal is a well-made fragrance, which, in spice of its interesting attributes, was not resourceful enough for inspiring me a buying thought.
